Lower Back Pain? A Likely Culprit: the QL

In America ninety percent of the population suffers from some kind of back pain at some time in their lives.1While there are many possible muscles and tissue to blame--one little muscle on each side of the spine is usually the main culprit. These are each called Quadratus Lumborum, or QLs for short.

When your lower back hurts on one side, especially while lifting a hip as you step over a curb, or when it hurts getting up from lying on your side this can often be attributed to the QL.

The QL attaches from the upper edge of the pelvis to the last rib of your ribcage.
